Description

Although much of the Northeast is over its winter months, the air is still crisp in that part of the country. Chad Lothian, a beer blogger and enthusiast, is getting ready up for summer, and preparing one of his favorite warm-weather drinks, the Mainer Summer Punch.

This beer cocktail is a spin off of Samuel Merritt’s Mainer Summer Saturday Punch, consisting of Allgash White, Lindeman’s Framboise and gin. In this recipe, Lothian substitutes vodka for gin. Allagash White is a Portland, Maine native beer, and embodies the Belgian wheat beer style of beverage. Framboise is a French word for raspberry. Commonly, it is used to refer to alcohol distilled with the fruit and is a unique rose-colored beer. Before hops were used in most beers, various fruits were used to season beers.

Framboise has a raspberry flavor that pairs surprisingly well with the beer. To make his own version of a Summer Punch, and serves it in a clear Mason jar mug. The drink also works well without vodka. Serve this drink on a nice hot day and it is sure to be the surprise hit of any party. For added color, flavor and flair, try using frozen raspberries in place of ice.
