Italian Wine - Pinot Grigio with: Ciro Pirone

With Ciro Pirone

Once part of the Venetian Republic and with sections under the influence of the Austro-Hungaraian Empire for some time, the wines of the region have noticeable Slavic and Germanic influences. The region has 3 IGT designations Alto Livenza, delle Venezie and Venezia Giulia. Nearly 62% of the wine produced in the region falls under a DOC designation.

The area is known predominantly for its white wines which are considered some of the best examples of Italian wine in that style. Along with the Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige/Sudtirol, the Friuli-Venezia Giulia forms the Tre Venezie wine region which ranks with Tuscany and Piedmont as Italy's world class wine regions.

The Attems family winemaking lineage dates back nearly a millennium. In 1106, records show that the Bishop of Salisbury gave them the estate for the purpose of cultivating vineyards and making wine. After 900 years of wine production, Attems aligned with the renowned Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi, one of Italy’s most revered wine families. Douglas Attems and the Frescobaldi family celebrate a legacy of friendship founded during their years as students at the University of Florence. The partnership feels that a wine’s quality and personality reflect the land it comes from, and they have pledged to further enhance the vines at Collio.

Technical Notes: Ramato offers its classic coppery hue and appealing limpidity. The multi-layered nose is impressively rich, with floral scents of lime blossom nicely enriching fruitier notes of wild strawberry and sour cherry, tapering off at the end into hints of fresh-picked almond. Although firmly-structured, the palate is remarkably smooth and rounded, with a lengthy progression that concludes in a leisurely, well-fruited finale

Since graduating from the Istituto Alberghiero (Hotel and Restaurant Management school) di Salerno in 1994, Ciro has traveled and worked in Italy, England and the US. Wine is always been an incredible passion for him, especially because growing up in Italy, wine was always a very important part of  family meals, and it was there he learned to respect and love it.Although Italy is always in his heart, in 1999 he moved to the USA permanently.  In Boston he continued his wine studies at Boston University, the International Sommelier Guild and WSET.Currently he has the position of Director of Italian Wines for Horizon Beverage Group.
