With Bo Cleary

He may be best known as the Fitness Coach to major motion picture stars like Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale, because he also has a part in their latest movie, The Fighter. In the movie, released December 17, 2010, Bo plays a policeman who breaks the hand of the main character played by Mark Wahlberg. The movie is based on the true story about the unlikely boxing champion from Lowell, Micky Ward.

Bo, currently living in Cape Ann, says that he has seen the movie and liked it a lot, and not just because he is in it. “It has a lot of drama, great acting by Mark as well as Christian Bale, who plays Micky Ward’s brother, Dicky Eklund. Besides that, it is a true story that happened right in our area.”

Now that the movie is out, what Bo really wants to do is be the video Fitness Coach to you through your newspaper web site. A recent study at Northwestern University found that a combination of exercise and eating control was far more effective than changing your eating alone. In his first video he introduces the exercise benefits of boxing, showing some of the basic moves that Mark Walberg and others use to get into and stay in shape. One of his long-term clients, Jenny Erickson, helps Bo show you the techniques. Bo’s other videos will start right after everyone makes their New Year’s resolution to get into better shape and lose a little weigh. Those videos will adhere to the same lessons he gives to his clients day in and day out. It is part instruction and part motivation with a healthy dose of nutritional advice.

Bo suggests starting in front of your mirror, moving your hands back and forth like a boxer does to train for a fight. Start slow, throwing your punches at about 60% of your power to start, going for 30 second rounds and stopping for 60 seconds, then repeat for 3 to 5 rounds. As you get used to it extend the time, the number of rounds, and eventually the power of your punches as well.To learn more about Bo Cleary you can find him on Facebook or at www.10roundsoffitness.com.

Instructions

Bo Cleary grew up in South Boston and lived there for over twenty years before moving to California. Growing up, Bo has always been physically active, whether that meant going to the gym or playing sports after school. While taking a course at Northeastern University in Boston, Bo attended a class called Cardiovascular Health and Exercise. He really enjoyed the class and knew from that moment that he would like to pursue a career in the fitness industry as a fitness coach.

Towards that end, Bo completed an internship at Boston Athletic Club where he started out by measuring blood pressure and giving fitness testing to members to assisting them in making decisions to help improve their physical fitness. He later became a fitness instructor there and started teaching his own class at the club as well as other fitness clubs in the area. Through years of coaching others, Bo devised a very effective fitness program. His training program was customized by world boxing star "Irish" Micky Ward and they go through it step by step in a DVD, “10 Rounds of Fitness”, available at www.10roundsoffitness.com.

Through the years, Bo has acquired a lot of experience as a fitness coach. In his earlier years, he worked as a fitness coach for young kids as part of various Boston area seminars and workshops for young adults. There, he taught them about fitness but also about self-esteem. Bo has worked with youth groups in the city of Boston for over 10 years in many different capacities including: youth athletic coordinator, fitness coach, and crisis intervention advisor. He enjoys giving back to the community where he grew up since he was on the receiving end of such mentoring while growing up.

He started to train actor Mark Wahlberg in a professional capacity and continues to train Mark to this day. Other clients include world-class boxer Micky Ward. These days, Bo splits his time between Cape Ann and South Boston in Massachusetts and travels to California to teach when he has the chance.
